About the Designer

Hi, I'm Jim McCarthy

I'm a freelance musician, composer, educator and instrument builder — and I've spent most of my career deeply immersed in the world of percussion. I hold a Masters degree in Music Performance from the University of Adelaide, and my work has taken me from concert stages and recording studios to building my own unique Contra-Bass marimbas and running web-based businesses for fellow instrument builders. Percussion instruments are my passion — designing, building and pushing them further is what I do.

About the Project

The Ultimate Vibes Motor System

My obsession with the vibraphone motor goes back decades. Frustrated by a system that offered little more than a single modulation effect with almost no real control, I set out to build something better. In 2017 I built the Masterclass Vibraphone I perform on today and began developing the motor system it deserved — working through improved fans, stepper motors, Arduino programming, driver electronics, transmission systems and mounting solutions. By the end of 2018 I had a fully functioning, whisper quiet, and perfectly synchronized prototype — a genuine breakthrough!... though I still knew it could be much better!

Seven years later, and the system has been truly perfected. Every flaw addressed, every limitation overcome, and a whole new world of control and programmable effects added on top. The result is something that has never existed before for the vibraphone — and this package puts it in your hands.

When you buy these plans, you're getting direct access to me — not a support ticket system. I want your build to succeed.

The Product

the Vibes Motor Unlimited
Motor System

A completely reimagined motor system for the vibraphone. Quiet, synchronized, reliable, responsive...
and...    a whole new world of control...
and...    a whole new world of FX possibilities.

Features of the VMU System

Four hardware versions — V1, V2, V2 BT Micro, and V3 — so you can build the one that matches your own needs, from a full physical control panel to a tiny app-only unit to a full touchscreen.
Stepper motor gives precision and synchronized fan position.
Driver electronics make it whisper-quiet and low power consumption.
Runs from a built-in monitored rechargeable battery, or almost any low power source.
Huge upgrade to your traditional control box with quick change buttons for stopped open and closed positions, independent speed and vibrato depth, program selection, bright digital display and more!
Touchless infrared control — independently toggle speed and vibrato between the knob and the sensor, or set both to respond together with the wave of a hand or mallet.
Control everything with the supplied phone app via bluetooth... either instead of the physical controls or together with them. Or have someone else control your motor for you!
Want to control your motor from anywhere in the world? It's possible with a browser-based WebTool — controlling your motor from any laptop, tablet, or desktop.
Comprehensive and versatile built-in FX library. So much more than just vibrato!
Fully programmable. Are you imagining FX I haven't already programmed? Create it yourself and upload it to your system!
3D-printable enclosures and clip-on mounting caddies for every version — no drilling into your instrument, ever.
